Undergraduate student of the University (for 2018-2019)

Eligibility to nominate and vote

Candidates, nominators, seconders and voters MUST be undergraduate students of the University as at close of nominations (4pm, Wednesday 20 September 2017) to be eligible under this membership category.

Where a person is eligible to nominate for more than one category, the person must choose only ONE of these categories to stand for election.

Candidates are expected to comply with the expected standards of behaviour as set out in the University Election policy (PPL 1.30.01a) and the Electoral Code.

Key definitions

Postgraduate student, means a student enrolled in a course or program leading to the award of a postgraduate certificate or diploma, or a master's or doctoral degree, of the University.

Undergraduate student, means a student who is not a postgraduate student.

Student, means a student enrolled in the University.

Information for prospective nominees

If you are elected to the 34th Senate of The University of Queensland you will be requested, by way of a letter of appointment, to agree to the  contents of the University of Queensland Act, your letter of appointment, and the contents of the Senate Charter.

The most applicable part of all these documents is the duties of Senate Members.

Senate Members are responsible and accountable to Senate. The function of Members is to ensure that Senate performs its functions and exercises its powers appropriately, effectively and efficiently.

Members are required to:

  • always act in the best interests of the University, with this obligation to be observed in priority to any duty Members may owe to those electing or appointing them;
  • act in good faith, honestly and for a proper purpose;
  • exercise appropriate care and diligence;
  • not improperly use their position to gain an advantage for themselves or someone else;
  • disclose and avoid conflicts of interest as set out in the University’s Conflict of Interest Policy;
  • respect the confidentiality of discussions of Senate and its Committees; and
  • abide by the University’s Code of Conduct, including the confidentiality obligation.

Ineligibility for membership of Senate (Section 23 of the University of Queensland Act 1998):
  1. A person is not eligible to become an elected, appointed or additional member if –The person is
    1. disqualified from managing corporations under the Corporations Act, part 2D.6;
    2. the person has a conviction for an indictable offence, other than an offence in relation to which the person is not eligible under paragraph (a).
  2. Also, a person is not eligible to be elected or appointed as an elected, appointed or additional member if the person’s election or appointment as the member would result in the person being a member for 12 years or more, whether continuously or not.
  3. Subsection (2) does not apply to a person if a majority of members agree the person may be elected or appointed as an elected, appointed or additional member.
  4. Subsection (1)(b) is subject to sections 25 and 26 of the University of Queensland Act 1998.

The nomination must be signed by the candidate and undersigned by two nominees who are entitled to vote in the membership category in which that candidate is standing for election.

Completed nomination forms must be received by the Elections Officer no later than 4pm Wednesday 20 September 2017.

Completed nomination forms can be lodged in the followings ways:

  • scanned and emailed to uqelections@uq.edu.au with the subject heading "2017 Senate Elections",
  • sent through Australia Post or the internal mail to:

Only undergraduates students of the University as at close of nominations (4pm, Wednesday 20 September 2017) will be eligible to vote in this in this membership category.

Voting is conducted electronically, and will be held between 11–25 October 2017  Eligible voters will receive instructions on how to vote directly to their personal UQ student email address.

Votes will be counted through a system of optional preferential voting, as set out in the University Election Procedures (PPL 1.30.01b).
