The Senate has provision for 8 elected members, including:

  • one member of the Academic Board
  • one member of the full-time or part-time academic staff of the University
  • one member of the full-time or part-time general staff of the University
  • one postgraduate student
  • one undergraduate student
  • three graduates of the University

Elected members of the Academic Board, staff and graduates hold office for 4 years; elected students hold office for 2 years.

Senate members may also serve on one or more of the Senate's committees. Nominations for these positions are called for as vacancies arise. 

Elections for the Senate are held in accordance with the University of Queensland Act 1998, University of Queensland Election of Elected Members of Senate Statute 2015 and PPL 1.30.01 University Elections—Policy.
